Annotations
The Annotations series began as material studies focused on Melville’s Moby Dick and Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Working with conte, grease pencil and watercolor, which are uncommon in my practice, I focused on details and measures implied by the original works and expanded the scale of handwritten notes so that scripted text interacts with color and space. My regular engagement with paper led to the addition of pen, pencil, charcoal, crayon, paintstick and enamel, as well as less traditional materials like epoxy, correction fluid, and coffee, but my goal was to keep each drawing open and direct.
